Carrying on the work of the late John McCarthy – End forced ECT

John McCarthy, founder of MadPride passed away yesterday after a brave battle with  motor neurone disease.

John worked tirelessly to end the stigma of “madness”.  Known to each other as “the enemy”, John and I had totally different way of approaching social change–as witnessed by many at Social Entrepreneurs Ireland 🙂

Although we disagreed on the path, we were both passionate about the human rights of people with mental illness and disability.   Two years ago, I admitted that he was right and I was wrong–he had done the impossible–he got the HSE to support MadPride AND started the wider community to finally begin to the discussion around loneliness, depression, suicide and the final crusade, to end forced ECT.

In the fight to end forced ECT, John and I began working together.   As a Board Member of the National Disability Authority of Ireland, I am trying to get the complete abolition…
